142 Throckmorton- Mill Valley, CA: Reflections in Yesterday, a solo exhibition by artist Anne Herrero
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILL VALLEY, CA: 142 Throckmorton presents the masterly paintings of award-winning artist Anne Herrero for the month of October and the Mill Valley Film Festival Mill Valley, California, October 4th, 2011 – Anne Herrero uses the lens of memory to create a psychological self-portrait that is hauntingly poignant. Her solo exhibition, Reflections in Yesterday, opens with a reception for the artist on October 4th from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. as part of Mill Valley’s First Tuesday Artwalk and will be up for the month of October.
The appeal of Anne Herrero’s work lies in its technical mastery and in its thematic investigation of memory. According to Lisa Bentley, of Art Approach art management group in New York City, Herrero’s work “somehow manages to muse and fuse the classical and the modern, the flat and the defined – it is personal biography meets movement, passion and a very physiological presence. Exhibiting an impeccable instinct for the emotionally evocative power of time, history and narrative, [Herrero] shines as an artist whose work relates more to a state of mind, mood or feeling than to a tangible object.”
The artist applies her understanding of traditional painting methods to reinforce the emotional potential of her images. Her muted palette, comprised solely of earth tones, recalls the physicality of the body and suggests a desire to reconcile the privilege of maturity with the eventuality of decomposition. Viewed together, Herrero’s paintings of her family members and the physical spaces they occupy offer a portrait of experience on both a personal and universal level.
The aptly titled Reflections in Yesterday is Herrero’s first solo show. Since earning her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2009, she has exhibited extensively in the United States and in Italy. She has won many awards, scholarships, and grants, including Best of Show at Artisans Art Gallery in 2003, Transfer Grants to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and The San Francisco Art Institute, and Academic Incentive Scholarships to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and The San Francisco Art Institute. Herrero’s work was published in a self-titled book in 2011 (available at blurb.com) and will be published in the collections Art in Focus: the Modern Masters and Important Artists of the World in 2012.
“Reflections in Yesterday” will be held at 142 Throckmorton Theatre. For more information visit: 142throckmortontheatre.org
